Career options in India: a complete guide, stage by stage.
Most lists of "career options" are really just long lists of job titles. This one is organised the way the decision actually arrives in your life — after Class 10, after Class 12, after graduation, or when you're rethinking a path you've already started — with a straight answer at each stage before the detail.
After Class 10
What are your career options after Class 10?
Direct answer: three broad routes — continue into Science, Commerce or Arts/Humanities for Class 11–12; move into a diploma or polytechnic; or take a skill-based vocational course. None of these routes is a permanent label. Under NEP 2020, schools are moving away from rigid stream walls, so subject combinations that cross the old boundaries are increasingly available.
The choice at this stage is less about a career and more about keeping the right doors open — Science keeps engineering, medicine and pure sciences open; Commerce keeps business, finance and law open; Arts/Humanities keeps design, media, civil services and the social sciences open. All three lead to overlapping destinations once you reach graduation.

What are your career options after Class 12?
Direct answer: a bachelor's degree (stream-linked, or via CUET, largely stream-independent), a professional or entrance-exam route (engineering, medicine, law, design, and others), a diploma, or a skill-based and entrepreneurial path. Class 12 is the stage with the widest fork in the road — and the one where the most external pressure usually shows up.
This is also where "what should I do" and "what am I allowed to do" get confused most often. CUET (conducted by the National Testing Agency) now lets many students apply to undergraduate courses regardless of their Class 12 stream — the options are wider than most students are told.

A degree is a foundation, not a fixed track — most professionals now change direction at least once after their first qualification.
